Trent Alexander-Arnold injury: Huge England blow as Liverpool defender ruled OUT of Euro 2020

England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has been ruled out of Euro 2020 due to injury.

The Liverpool right-back injured his thigh during Wednesday's friendly win over Austria, limping off the pitch in the closing stages.

England manager Gareth Southgate was not optimistic following full-time, telling reporters: “It looks like thigh, but we don’t know the extent at the moment.

“Clearly it’s not a good sign he had to walk off, and he looked in some discomfort with it. But we will know more in the next 24 or 48 hours.”

Scans on Thursday have confirmed that defender will miss the entire tournament with an initial prognosis of six weeks out.

A Football Association statement read: “A scan on Thursday confirmed the 22-year-old will be unable to play in the forthcoming tournament so has withdrawn from the England squad to return to his club for rehabilitation.”

Southgate is able to call up as many replacements as he wishes before England’s first game, in 10 days’ time, though the FA announced on Thursday night that a decision in regard would not be confirmed until after Sunday’s friendly against Romania.

With Alexander-Arnold one of four right-backs in the squad, midfielders James Ward-Prowse and Jesse Lingard will likely into consideration from the standby list.

The statement continued: “Gareth Southgate will not confirm a replacement until after Sunday’s return to the Riverside Stadium for the warm-up fixture against Romania.”
