Trent Alexander-Arnold forces Lee Dixon into commentary U-turn during England's rout of San Marino

Trent Alexander-Arnold registered three assists in ten minutes late on in England 's rampant victory over San Marino, forcing commentator Lee Dixon to backtrack on previous comments.

Though the Liverpool right-back's performance came against the lowest FIFA-ranked side in the world, England simply had to beat what was in front of them and did so convincingly.

The Three Lions hammered San Marino 10-0 to confirm their place at next year's Qatar World Cup, with Gareth Southgate 's side finishing top of their qualification group.

Alexander-Arnold started and played the entire contest in his traditional right-wingback role, spending almost all of the game in the opposition half peppering the box with crosses, such was England's dominance.

Midway through the second half, Reece James appeared on the touchline ready to come on with Dixon guessing that it would be Alexander-Arnold as the player to make way.

Picking on his body language, he said on ITV : "We see James getting ready to come on and it looks like Trent Alexander-Arnold might come off. His body language is not great. It’s been a difficult evening.

"It looks like he’s just tried a bit too hard. His passing hasn’t been quite right. Been caught in possession a few times. I think it’s only natural with all the speculation of whether he should be in the team or not."

Due to England's wealth of options at right-back, Alexander-Arnold has often found it difficult to cement his status as a first-team regular.

Vying for the same role as Chelsea 's James and Man City stalwart Kyle Walker, Alexander-Arnold gave a stellar account of himself on Monday evening.

Much to Dixon's surprise, James did not come on for Alexander-Arnold, allowing the Anfield favourite to notch three assists in a ten minute period.

Pinpoint, precision crosses from the Liverpool star allowed Tyrone Mings, Tammy Abraham and Bukayo Saka to get their names on the scoresheet in the latter stages of the second half.

As a result, Dixon swiftly U-turned on his previous position of the Liverpool' star's body language and began to wax lyrical over Alexander-Arnold.

"We know the quality that Trent Alexander-Arnold’s got,” Dixon claimed after the right-back had placed a deft cross on to the head of Mings for England's eight goal of the evening.

"It looked a little bit behind him. It was a really good header. [He] gets ahead of it and then just waits and guides it into that far corner. The pace of the ball did the job."

The second assist for Abraham swiftly followed, prompting a similar response from Dixon: "It’s a lovely ball in, the cushion on his knee just softs so it drops onto his foot. Great little ball in that."

Alexander-Arnold's final assist set up Arsenal star Saka, with Dixon claiming: "Body language of Trent Alexander-Arnold there, smiling. This is what he can bring to a team.

"Superb quality on the ball putting the ball into the danger area with the right amount of pace, right type of cross.

"Just a little dink and Saka’s just waiting for it. Defence is all over the shop but the delivery is superb."
