Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson like Brazil icons and Liverpool should show no Barcelona fear

Jurgen Klopp has been urged to go for the jugular when Liverpool meet Barcelona as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson were likened to Brazil legends Roberto Carlos and Cafu.

The Reds fly out to Spain on Tuesday ahead of the first leg of their Champions League semi-final tie at Camp Nou on Wednesday evening.

For the netural, it pits two of the best attacking teams in Europe against each other with the likes of Lionel Messi, Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez squaring off against Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and potentially Roberto Firmino .

Klopp 's side usually look to impose their own game on proceedings but will face the daunting prospect of a Barca side who clinched their eighth La Liga title in 10 years last week.

Lawrenson, though, thinks Liverpool shouldn't be overawed when they are entertained in Catalonia in front of nearly 100,000 supporters.

Liverpool star Sadio Mane responds to Real Madrid transfer rumours ahead of Barcelona clash

The ex-defender, who won 10 major honours at Anfield, thinks the Reds should not be making any special tactical tweaks to how they operate when they meet Ernesto Valverde's Spanish champions on Wednesday.

Lawrenson told the ECHO: "A lot of football teams try to change the way they play when they face Barcelona, but I don't think Jurgen Klopp will do that with his Liverpool team.

"You look at the front three they have with Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane and you question why wouldn't they go to the Nou Camp and attack?

"If you think that is your strength, then you have to do it. Both teams have incredible attacking players, but Liverpool have a better defence.

"We can go there and be confident in attacking and if they score first, or even get a goal away from home, that is massive for the tie. It's a great way to be."

With a total of 24 assists between them this season, full-back duo Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson have been instrumental to Liverpool's sustained push for honours this term.

Robertson's total of 13 is two more than his right-sided colleague Alexander-Arnold and the pair have a friendly rivalry over who will end the campaign with the most assists.

Lawrenson likened the pair's influence on this current Liverpool team to that of iconic Brazil duo Roberto Carlos and Cafu, who both starred for La Selecao during their triumph at the 2002 World Cup.

Robertson said last week that the offensive full-backs wouldn't be tailoring their gameplan at Barca and it is a viewpoint Lawrenson agrees with.

He added: "I am totally with Robertson there because why wouldn't you play to your strengths?

What really happened when Lionel Messi last faced Liverpool - and who can be 2019's Alvaro Arbeloa

"They create so much and open up so much space, so they can get some joy if they bomb on.

"If you look at Liverpool's team, obviously with the front three, the two full-backs sometimes make it five attackers. Jordan Henderson has had a different role of late, but all the midfielders work so hard so help them thrive.

"Listen, I am not saying these two are as good, but they remind me of the impact the two full-backs Roberto Carlos and Cafu had on the great Brazil side.

"They give the attack an added dimension as the Brazil defenders did, they have the same kind of affect on the team."

Liverpool's success over the two legs against Barca will hinge on how well What really happened when Lionel Messi last faced Liverpool - and who can be 2019's Alvaro Arbeloa and former Reds superstar Suarez.

Argentina international Messi has plundered 46 goals already this term and has once again been the driving force behind Barca's success, while Suarez has netted 21 of his own for the Blaugrana.

"Messi is an absolute genius and if he turns it on for even half an hour, he is going to be very difficult to stop," added Lawrenson. "Luis Suarez too.

"If he had stayed at Liverpool another two or three years, we could be talking about him alongside even King Kenny (Dalglish) at Anfield and I mean that.

"He scored goals for fun at Anfield and not even normal ones, they were usually worldies!

"When Barcelona signed Suarez in 2014, I was told from a reliable source who I trust that Messi went to the coach at the time Luis Enrique and asked where Suarez was going to play.

"Apparently Enrique said he needed to speak to Messi about it, but he just told his coach to play Suarez where he wanted and he would work around him to fit his game to match Suarez.

Barcelona name Coutinho and Suarez in squad to face Liverpool - but there's one big absentee

"That's the kind of man and player Messi is. Could you imagine Cristiano Ronaldo doing that?!

"With Philippe Coutinho, it remains to be seen if he will start as Barca might favour Ousmane Demebele, but he might have a point to prove, too."
