Trent Alexander-Arnold advised over private call with Steven Gerrard amid recent slump

Jamie Carragher has urged Trent Alexander-Arnold to get in touch with Steven Gerrard to help address his slump in form.

The Liverpool defender has struggled in his recent appearances, with Thursday's defeat against Burnley another night to forget for the youngster.

Alexander-Arnold failed to find a Liverpool shirt with all-but one of his 21 crosses, while a clip of him being taken on by Dwight McNeil is doing the rounds on social media.

It comes after the full-back was criticised for giving the ball away 38 times against Southampton - more than any other Premier League player in a single game this season.

After three seasons of standout performances, it is arguably the first time Alexander-Arnold has hit a rut like this in his career, and Carragher believes ex-Liverpool legend Gerrard can help.

"We too easily forget that Trent Alexander-Arnold is only 22," Carragher told The Telegraph . "Trent could do worse than share a private call with Steven Gerrard.

"I remember well how Stevie overcame a slight dip after his first initial breakthrough into the first team, guided back to his best. It happens."

Liverpool's problems go beyond just the form of Alexander-Arnold, but his dip has certainly hampered their attacking output.

Last season he racked up the second-highest number of assists in the division, while also creating an abundance of chances for his teammates.

That has not been the case this season, and he has looked devoid of confidence in recent outings.

It hasn't been a particularly easy campaign for him, though, given he has played among a constantly changing back line amid Liverpool's injury woes.

And Carragher has slammed Liverpool for failing to sign a new centre-back in January to ease the burden.

"I believe the club’s response should have been activated on October 19, the day Virgil van Dijk’s cruciate knee operation was confirmed," Carragher vented.

"Frankly, it is preposterous that three months on and with the transfer window now open, Klopp felt compelled to use Jordan Henderson in the position against Manchester United."
