The Pacific Highway at Highfields remains under a reduced speed limit on Sunday after a pothole opened up across all three lanes of the highway on Saturday afternoon.
Police received reports of damage to vehicles which drove through the 300mm wide trench in the westbound lanes of the highway at the intersection with Kahibah Road.
Police attended on Saturday afternoon and reported that the trench grew bigger while they were on scene.
A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the hole was caused by heavy rain that fell in the vicinity of a road work site on Saturday, causing subsidence and washing away new surface at around 1pm.
Regional maintenance crews placed a temporary load of hot mix in the trench to allow traffic to negotiate this section of the highway under a reduced 40 km/h speed limit and will return on Sunday night to apply another load of hot mix and allow the highway to fully open to traffic.
