Trees vandalised on Main Street in Coalisland after £3.4m public realm scheme

A video has emerged on social media showing trees being vandalised on Main Street in Coalisland.

The incident is believed to have happened on the evening of Monday, July 19, in the Co Tyrone village, with the video showing three men swinging from a newly planted tree.

A spokesperson for Mid Ulster District Council said a total of four trees were vandalised in the newly constructed Coalisland Public Realm.

They added: "All four trees were broken and needed to be cleanly cut at the base of the tree by the Public Realm Contractor to make safe for the general public.

"The trees will be replanted prior to completion of the project.”

The £3.4 million public realm scheme, which began in September 2019, is funded by the Department for Communities (DfC) and Mid Ulster District Council.

The scheme includes new footways, parking and loading bays, stone kerbing, street furniture and tree planting, as well as improved lighting and drainage.

It also launched the new one-way system on Main Street in the town which allowed for widened footpaths to meet disability access and pedestrian safety requirements, as well as improving traffic flow in the town centre.
