Tree planting in Castle Douglas in build up for Queen's platinum jubilee celebrations

A tree has been planted in Castle Douglas in the build up to the Queen’s platinum jubilee celebrations.

The Queen’s Green Canopy is a special campaign aimed at marking the Queen’s 70 year reign – the longest of any British monarch – by encouraging people to plant a tree for the jubilee.

And to back the scheme, Lord Lieutenant of the Stewartry Lord Sinclair and depute council leader Rob Davidson recently planted a Worley golden sycamore at Market Hill.

They were joined by local councillors Davie Stitt and Iain Howie, deputy lord lieutenants Chris Walker and Mark Jardine and the council’s Jim McCrossan.

Lord Sinclair said: “2022 is a momentous year in the history of our monarchy.

“The Queen’s Green Canopy is an exciting initiative, not only to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee but encourages everyone to participate in and learn about planting trees and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.

“I would encourage people to use the coming months to plan their Jubilee planting projects.”

Everyone from individuals to Scout and Guiding groups, villages, schools and businesses will be encouraged to plant trees from this month through to the end of the jubilee year in 2022.

All planting projects can be uploaded onto an interactive map on the new QGC website so that everyone can “share and inspire others”.

The Woodland Trust Free Trees for Schools and Communities Scheme has made more than three million saplings available and schools and communities can apply for one on a first come first served basis.
