Tree crashes onto car park in Calderstones Park during strong gales

A tree crashed to the ground in a Liverpool park yesterday during a day of freak hailstones and strong gales.

The tree was uprooted in the high winds and fell into the car park next to an ice cream parlour in Calderstones Park.

It was the third reported tree in south Liverpool to come crashing down during the continuation of the Bank Holiday's stormy weather.

A tree on the perimeter of The Black Wood was toppled, causing Woolton Road to be closed in both directions.

Another tree fell on a Cooper Avenue in Mossley Hill as council teams worked to clear the trees and make the areas safe.

This morning, workers were out in Calderstones Park to cut up the large tree which had fallen in the car park next to the ice cream parlour, which is popular with visitors.

People have posted on a Calderstones Park Facebook group showing how the tree had been pulled out at the roots and caused damage to a surrounding stone wall before landing in the car park.

One person who posted several photographs of the uprooted tree said: "So, so lucky that nobody was killed when this tree fell yesterday at the ice cream parlour car park."

Another commented: "Very lucky. That area is usually so busy but looks like the bad weather that caused the fall also kept people away."

The Reader charity who run the ice cream parlour had to close the shop yesterday as a result of the tree falling so close but have reopened today.

The ECHO has approached Liverpool Council for comment.
