Since it was announced that President Trump's signature was being added to millions of paper economic stimulus checks, many have wondered how that decision came to be. In a shocking twist, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said it was all his idea.
In an interview, Mnuchin said that since it would take much longer if all of the checks were endorsed by President Trump, his signature will only appear on the memo line.
"That was my idea," Mnuchin told Jake Tapper on CNN on Sunday after he was asked if Trump wanted to put his signature on the checks. "He is the President, and I think it's a terrific symbol to the American public."
Mnuchin added that he was hopeful that more Americans would register to receive their payment via direct deposit in order to avoid waiting for a paper check.
The U.S. has seen more than 722,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus with nearly 35,000 deaths. More than 20 million people have signed up for unemployment benefits in the last month as the virus has ravaged the country's economy.
