Treasurer Lee Squelch stole thousands from animal charity - but will only have to pay back £5

A treasurer who stole thousands of pounds from the charity he worked for has been told to pay just £5 back.

Lee Squelch wrote a series of cheques from the bank account of Pembrokeshire Byways and Bridleways Association for which he worked, and over a three-year period defrauded the charity out of a total of £6,300.

He attempted to cover his tracks by making the payments look like they were donations to organisations including the Wales Air Ambulance and Royal British Legion, by writing those organisations names on the cheque stubs.

But his thefts were revealed after he made a bank transfer to his own account which prompted Barclays to raise concerns.

The 37-year-old, of of Llandewi Velfrey in Narberth, appeared at Swansea Crown Court in May where he pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud between 2016 and 2018.

On that occasion, the court heard Squelch's offending had been uncovered when he made a bank transfer from the charity to his own account, which prompted a police investigation after the bank flagged up the transfer.

In interview Squelch claimed a £1,500 he had written to himself had been a "mistake" and payments to a pub where he worked as bar manager were to cover the cost of meetings held there.

The father-of-two was given a 12 month prison sentence suspended for 18 months and ordered to complete a rehabilitation course and 150 hours of unpaid work.

His case returned to the court, sitting at Swansea's Civic Centre, for a proceeds of crime hearing.

David Singh, representing Squelch, told the court the defendant had no available assets.

A benefit order of £2,863 was agreed by the court - the figure Squelch had personally benefited from.

But as a result of having no assets, Craig Jones prosecuting proposed a nominal £5 order, which was agreed by Recorder Aidan Eardley.

Mr Singh added: "The defendant agrees the figure involved and his given consent to the order being made in his absence".

The fee is to be payable within one month, with one month imprisonment in default of non-payment.

He was also told to pay a surcharge - £128 payable within 6 months

No compensation order was made to the charity, which works to improve access to the bridleways in west Wales.
