Between the 16th and 19th centuries, spice traders worked along trade routes, carrying spices and artifacts from Asia to Europe and beyond. Pepper was taken from India and Sri Lanka to Rome, chilli was taken from Portugal to India, and cumin was grown in Egypt and carried to Malta. As the demand for spices grew, empires were established and expanded across Asia.
This exhibition presents the stories of the spice markets, slave trade and shipwrecks, told through artworks. It includes over 250 outstanding and rarely seen examples of ceramics, furniture, maps, metalware, paintings and prints, plus the precious Chinese porcelain.
Sourced from public and private collections around the world, it reveals how Asian and European artists interacted, and how the foundations were laid for today’s aesthetic globalism.
