Tre’Quan Smith doubtful to return vs. Buccaneers with ankle injury

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith exited his team’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers late in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury and was initially reported by the team as questionable to return. As he underwent further evaluation and the Saints extended their lead over Tampa Bay, New Orleans announced that his status was updated as doubtful to return.

It’s unclear whether Smith aggravated the ankle injury that sidelined him for two weeks, having first been injured by a low tackle against the Los Angeles Rams back in Week 2. It’s possible he injured his other leg. Smith was a limited participant in the first two days of practice for the Saints last week before practicing fully on Friday in the final session before Sunday’s kickoff.

Fortunately, the Saints did not appear to need his help against Tampa Bay. Wide receiver Michael Thomas verified his superstar status with a performance that saw him catch 11 of 13 targets to gain 182 yards and score two touchdowns. Hopefully, Smith will recover soon and be ready for next week’s road game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
