Tre Jones returns, Matthew Hurt scores 25 as No. 2 Duke routs Boston College

DURHAM, N.C. _ Tre Jones' first game in more than three weeks helped No. 2 Duke play as well as it has all season.

The sophomore point guard, after missing the last two games with a sprained foot, handed out 10 assists and Matthew Hurt scored 25 points in the Blue Devils' 88-49 wipeout of Boston College in ACC basketball Tuesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The 6-foot-2 Jones saw his first game action since Duke's 77-63 league win at Virginia Tech on Dec. 6. The Blue Devils (12-1, 2-0 ACC) had a light schedule as they took breaks for final exams and the holidays, and Jones was held out of nonconference wins over Wofford and Brown.

His return keyed Duke's stellar night of offense as the Blue Devils shot 51.5% and produced 20 assists on 35 made field goals.

Hurt hadn't scored more than 12 points since his 20-point effort in an 83-70 win over Winthrop on Nov. 29. But he broke out against Boston College, scoring 20 points in the first half alone.

The 6-9 freshman finished the night 10 of 16 from the field, including 5 of 10 on 3-pointers.

The Blue Devils made a season-best 12 3-pointers against Boston College. Hurt sank five of them, leading a group of seven Duke players with at least one 3-pointer in the game. Duke finished 12 of 28 (42.9 percent). The Blue Devils entered the night shooting 33.9% on 3-pointers.

Boston College entered Tuesday night's game next-to-last in the ACC in offensive efficiency at .97 points per possession. Only Georgia Tech, at .969, was worse. The Eagles played down to their reputation, particularly in the first half when they endured scoreless stretches covering 5 minutes, 59 seconds and 4:18 as the Blue Devils opened a 45-19 halftime lead. The Eagles finished at 33.9-percent shooting overall, including 3 of 18 on 3-pointers.

Boston College coach Jim Christian led his team from the bench wearing a protective walking boot on his left foot. The sixth-year Eagles coach is recovering from microfracture surgery.
