Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Tre Herndon will be taking home a bit more cheddar than he anticipated (at least, eventually) for his play during the 2020 season.
On Tuesday, the NFL announced its performance-based pay distributions for every franchise, and Herndon led the way for the Jags, earning an additional $486,671. Performance-based pay is a part of the collective bargaining agreement; players are entitled to compensation based on their playing time and production relative to their base salary.
In total, the league dedicated $272 million to PBP payouts ($8.5 million per team). Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, those payouts have been delayed until 2024. Other Jaguars players at the top of the list include safeties Josh Jones ($332,324) and Andrew Wingard ($319,853), as well as defensive end Adam Gotsis ($305,515). The players at the bottom of the list are former kickers Stephen Hauschka ($740) and Brandon Wright ($921).
According to the NFL, Herndon saw action on 95.5% of plays, which led to 76 tackles and five passes defensed. Though the team upgraded the cornerback spot with Shaquill Griffin from Seattle and Herndon likely won’t start in 2021, Jacksonville chose to re-sign him, and he figures to play a big role in the secondary rotation heading forward.
