VAR and the latest handball rule are in the headlines once more.
Tottenham Hotspur were well on course for three points against Newcastle United this afternoon.
Lucas Moura’s early strike had the home side 1-0 up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and it was only Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow who kept the scoreline as that, with a string of fine saves.
Then, deep into stoppage time in the second half, Eric Dier was penalised for handball, despite the ball hitting him from close proximity and without the Spurs man having any idea it had done.
A lengthy VAR review took place, with the pitchside monitor checked, before a penalty was eventually given.
Callum Wilson stepped up and dispatched the penalty to secure a 1-1 draw for the visitors.
It was no surprise that VAR call dominated the talk post-match.
@tclark92: Absolute disgrace @FA @premierleague @FIFAcom disgusting.
@jsfreed: Awful @premierleague just awful. No way that should have been a penalty.
@Dina1PR: Utterly, utterly farcical - handball? #VAR is an utter joke. #TOTNEW #COYS robbed
@markwools: Whole team should walk off.. take a stance.
@TomWals64153106: This handball rule is a joke! Football is ruined if this doesn't change!!
@mattjbush: Done with football.
@HalPerry09: VAR is ruining football.
@jeremybrier: Football ruined for everyone.
@progright: That was a travesty.
@johnrhueston: VAR is killing football. It’s becoming a joke. How can you give a penalty when you’re not even facing the direction and flight of the ball.
@A_Tottenham_Man: Was going to be the strongest 1-0 thrashing we've seen in years, no danger of conceding all game. The win has been stolen.
