Travellers who tried to set up two illegal camps in Abbots Leigh moved on when police were called

A group of travellers who tried to set up an illegal camp on fields in Abbots Leigh have moved on.

The group of between 10 and 15 caravans arrived on a field just off Pill Road on the A369 in the village at around 5.30pm last night (May 14).

It is understood the land they attempted to occupy is part of a farm and is privately owned.

Police were informed and the group moved off the same evening.

However hours later officers received reports of a further encampment by a separate group of travellers at Denny View Road in Abbots Leigh.

This group has also now moved on.

A police spokesman said: "Travellers were reported entering land off Pill Road on the A369 at Abbots Leigh at around 5.30pm last night.

"They left the site the same evening.

"There was a further incident reported at 10pm yesterday where a separate group of travellers had moved on to Denny View Road at Abbots Leigh.

"This group also appears to have moved on."

It is understood that the group which temporarily moved onto the farmland were the same group which had been camped on a car park of an office at a business park at Serbert Road in Portishead.

The group of around 10 caravans arrived on the site last Friday night.

They moved off yesterday (May 14) leaving a large amount of rubbish behind them which will now have to be cleaned up by the landowner.

Another group of travellers parked on land at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre in Weston-super-Mare now face legal action to evict them.

The group of around a dozen caravans - which had previously  been on land at Locking and camped on the Beach Lawns - arrived on the land last Wednesday night and despite an order by North Somerset Council to move off, still remain in situ.

The area has been deluged with travellers in the past 10 days.

When parked on council owned land,  the authority has to carry out welfare checks, ask the group to leave and if they do not comply, apply to the courts to move them on.

Currently the council has no transient sites for travellers where they can be moved onto.

However the district does offer a number of permanent pitches for the travelling community including the Willowmead site and a newly developed site at the Old Junction Yard, both in Weston-super-Mare.

There are also privately operated traveller camps in the district.
