Travellers who camped on Queen's front lawn pitch up down the road after being moved on

Travellers who were moved on after camping on the Queen's front lawn outside Windsor Castle have now pitched up down the road.

The group parked up to 30 caravans and motorhomes outside the monarch's residence in Berkshire yesterday, but were quickly intercepted by officials and parking wardens.

After being asked to leave, however, they set up their camp at Seymour Park, opposite the Royal Windsor Racecourse, which is around a mile and a half down the road.

Police community support officers and council staff were seen handing out welfare leaflets to about 10 caravans that were still in the area this morning.

The Queen is thought to be staying at Windsor Castle, one of her favourite residences - covering 13,000 acres, featuring fortifications, a palace and small town.

The group were believed to have initially parked up on Windsor’s Long Walk, directly in front of the Queen’s private quarters.

The 2.6-mile track connects Windsor Castle with Snow Hill in Windsor Great Park and is a popular tourist destination with visitors from around the world making the long trek.

But the Travellers were dispersed shortly after police were called to the scene at around 6pm yesterday evening.

Many people were quick to react on social media, with one Twitter user complaining: “Hope they get moved and don’t leave litter!”

Another complained: “If I park my car illegally outside Windsor Castle, I get a fine, or worse, arrested.”

It comes after a group of Travellers were also moved from Kew Green in Richmond, near the Royal Botanic Gardens, yesterday evening.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said about the Windsor camp: “At around 6pm last night Thames Valley Police were called about an unauthorised encampment on the Long Walk in Windsor.

“Officers engaged with the landowner and also those in the encampment and those who had gathered dispersed.”

Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead Council has not yet sought a court order to force the Travellers to move on again.

A spokesman added: “The encampment was set up last night at about 8pm after they were moved on from the Long Walk.

“The council is aware and in line with policy and statutory requirements on us welfare visits are being undertaken before any decisions are made on how to proceed.

“The situation will continue to be actively monitored to ensure that the impact on local residents and the environment is minimised.”
