Travellers warned of significant delays as workers at UK airport strike this summer

Holidaymakers travelling through Aberdeen airport face 14 days of delays this summer as security staff strike over pay.

From Monday, security staff in the Unite union will strike in an escalating pay dispute with their employer, ICTS.

Walk-outs will take place on dates between 6 July and 1 August after Unite members unanimously supported industrial action.

According to Unite, the strike mandate follows a “refusal by ICTS HBS Security to make an acceptable pay offer to the workers”.

The union warned travellers to expect significant delays as the Unite members on strike make up the majority of the baggage screening team at Aberdeen airport.

Schools in Aberdeen broke up for the summer holidays, a peak time for air travel, on 2 July.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “ICTS is a very profitable company that can easily afford to give our members a decent pay increase. It has been caught red-handed putting profits before people.”

According to Unite, Aberdeen airport’s parent group recorded annual profits of £7.6m in 2025.

Unite industrial officer, Paula Buchan, said: “ICTS would rather cause massive disruption at the airport than positively work with Unite to resolve this dispute.

Strike action will cause significant delays at Aberdeen airport. ICTS still has time to return to talks with an offer workers can accept. A failure to do so will result in significant airport disruption.”
