Travellers to Spain warned of 'extreme risk' weather as Storm Gloria batters east coast

Travellers to Spain are being warned of 'extreme risk' weather as the country's north east coast gets battered by Storm Gloria.

Heavy rain, wind and snow has descended on regions, including popular tourist spots Barcelona and Valencia.

Local media reports that two people have died due to the severe weather - a woman found dead in a park who is believed to have died from hypothermia, and a man who was run over by a van that lost control in the snow.

The UK government has updated its advice to travellers to warn them of the dangers they may face.

The latest advice reads: "High winds and snowfall may cause road closures and disruption to transport services.

"Check the Spanish Civil Protection Unit for precautionary advice on the area you’re visiting and see information about the weather warning  here .

"If you’re in the area you should exercise caution and follow the advice of the local authorities."

Spain’s meteorological office (AEMET) has issued an “extreme risk” red weather warning for nine provinces including Murcia, Barcelona, Girona, Valencia and Alicante.

The coast of Alicante saw waves of higher than six meters over the last two days, according to local reports.

Members of the public are being warned to stay away from coastlines.

The storm is expected to continue into Tuesday before eventually dying down on Wednesday, with some areas expected to see record snowfall.

Alicante Airport was closed to passengers from 1pm today and is expected to stay closed until tomorrow afternoon.

The closure follows a fire near to the departures lounge which damaged the building's roof last week.

A statement from the airport operator said: "For security, before the effects of Storm Gloria and after the fire occurred, the airport will remain closed today.

"Check with your airline and do not go to the airport."
