Travellers set up in Liverpool with 'security dog unit' on site

A group of Travellers have set up camp in north Liverpool, with dog unit security vans spotted on the site.

A number of caravans, mobile homes and other vehicles have parked up on land at the junction of Great Homer Street and Jennifer Avenue.

The land is surrounded by blue hoardings with signs marking it out as part of the Great Homer Street District Centre project that is being delivered by developers St Modwen.

A local resident got in touch with images of the camp, which has been set up despite clear No Entry signs surrounding the site.

One of the images the resident took shows two vans parked up that are clearly marked with signs saying 'Security' and 'Dog Unit'.

While it is not clear whether these security vans are associated with the Traveller camp or the owners of the land, the resident told the ECHO that when he asked those in the vans why they were there he was told it was because there were people staying on the land.

We have contacted Liverpool City Council for further details on the situation at Great Homer Street and to ask what action may be taken regarding the situation.

There have been a number of Traveller camps seen around Merseyside in recent days and weeks.

Earlier this week a group of caravans left an old gasworks site in Birkenhead, Wirral after several days after they were issued with an eviction notice.

And last week complaints were made by people living in the Crosby area who were becoming increasingly frustrated about a Traveller camp near the town's famous beach.

Caravans and other vehicles were parked up at Burbo Bank Road North.

A spokesperson for Liverpool City Council said: “We were notified by a member of the public about the arrival of these vehicles on land on Skirving Street on Tuesday.

“As the land is privately owned, the council’s role is to notify key stakeholders including the landowners and to offer advice and guidance. We can confirm this process is under way in accordance with the Unauthorised Encampment Process”
