Travellers set up illegal camp on business park in Portishead

Travellers have moved onto a car park on business park in Portishead.

The group of around six caravans and associated are believed to have pitched up on the car parking area outside offices off Serbert Way - to the rear of the Sainsbury's supermarket - on Friday night.

It is understood the office which the car park belongs to is vacant.

The police have been informed of the group's arrival as has North Somerset Council.

A local resident said: "I believe the travellers arrived on Friday night and they seem to have a large number of children with them.

"The matter has been reported to the police."

As the land which the group is parked on is believed to be privately owned, it will be up to the landowner to take steps to move them off.

Council issues deadline to travellers at illegal encampment

North Somerset Council officers are expected to visit the group to carry out welfare checks. North Somerset is a popular stop off with groups of travellers.

Another group of around nine caravans moved onto land at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre in Weston-super-Mare on Wednesday night.

The group - believed to be the same travellers who had been camped on the Beach Lawns on Weston seafront earlier in the week -  was ordered to leave by North Somerset Council by 6pm on Friday but are still believed to be in situ.

If they fail to move on, council officers will have to apply to the magistrates court next week for a notice to evict them.

North Somerset Council spends thousands of pounds each year on dealing with illegal traveller encampments.

Travellers leave Weston-super-Mare seafront following police intervention

As well as officer time and the cost of applying to the magistrates court for an order to evict the groups there are also the costs of cleaning up sites after illegal encampments.

Last summer the authority was forced to play 'cat and mouse' with traveller groups who, after being evicted from one site, simply moved to another close by.

Each time the authority has to carry out welfare checks, ask the group to leave and if they do not comply, apply to the courts to move them on.

Currently the council has no transient sites for travellers where they can be moved onto.

Police descend on travellers' camp on Weston-super-Mare seafront

However the district does offer a number of permanent pitches for the travelling community including the Willowmead site and a newly developed site at the Old Junction Yard, both in Weston-super-Mare.

There are also privately operated traveller camps in the district.
