Travellers set up camp at one of Merseyside's most popular beaches

A group of travellers have set up an illegal camp at one of Merseyside's most beautiful locations.

A convoy of more than a dozen caravans and other vehicles has pitched up at a car park near Formby beach .

It is understood the camp arrived yesterday.

National Trust say they are 'liaising closely with the police' (Supplied)

A spokesman for National Trust, which owns the car park on Lifeboat Road, said: "Approximately 15 traveller vehicles are currently parked on land [we] look after in Formby .

"This area is open to the public to enjoy and is an important area for conservation also.

"We are liaising closely with the police to serve notice to leave. We will continue to monitor the situation and have asked the police to do so too."

In June of last year, residents were outraged when travellers pitched up illegally at three different areas in the borough within the space of a few weeks - one of these being the Lifeboat Road car park.

At the time, one resident said: "It's just disgraceful, I am all for living and letting people live but we will have to deal with the mess left behind.

"At the end of the day, fly-tipping is illegal, and nobody should be above the law."

Sefton is a popular choice for such camps.

In September last year, a Freedom Of Information request showed travellers are setting up camp illegally in the borough more than once a month
