Travellers set up camp at former Kwik Save supermarket site

A Clevedon pub manager says travellers have pitched up on the derelict former site of a supermarket.

The woman who runs the Crab Apple in Millcross told Bristol Live there are three caravans on nearby land which was once occupied by a Kwik Save.

The pub manager, who did not wish to be named, said the chain on the gate to the site was cut when the travellers arrived on Wednesday afternoon (May 22).

She added: "Right at this moment, it's causing a lot of upset to neighbours in the surrounding houses. Everyone is coming into the pub asking what is going on.

"I would say there are at least 50 tonnes of rubble on top of a mound, from when the Kwik Save was knocked down.

"There are kids in the camp, and I worry the rubble could fall on them."

NHS North Somerset bought the land in 2010 as part of plans to open a community hospital there.

The Kwik Save was demolished in 2013, but the hospital has yet to be built.

The Crab Apple manager told Bristol Live she has reported the camp to the NHS.

NHS North Somerset has been approached for comment.
