Travellers parked at beauty spot issued notice to leave by council

A group of travellers illegally parked at Portishead Lake Grounds has been served with a notice to leave.

The group of four caravans, two camper vans and associated vehicles arrived at the beauty spot on Monday evening.

The group is parked up on Lake Road, close to the bowling green.

Their arrival has been reported to North Somerset Council – which owns the Lake Grounds – and the police.

The council visited the group yesterday to carry out welfare checks and has issued the group with a notice to leave the site this morning.

North Somerset Council spokeswoman Zoe Briffitt said: “We have received reports of an unauthorised encampment at the Lake Grounds.

“We visited the site on Monday morning and have concluded our health and welfare enquiries.

“We are in the process of serving a notice to leave the land, which will require the group to leave by 9.00 am today.”

The group had initially tried to park up on a site at the rear of Marina Gardens in the town but were moved on by police.

They arrived at the lake grounds shortly afterwards.

Local residents have reported the group have been hanging out washing on the barriers.

There have also been reports of amounts of discarded toilet roll being found in the neighbouring bushes.
