Travellers pitch up on the Downs and refuse to move

Travellers camped at Durdham Down have refused to move to a transit site in Avonmouth.

The unauthorised encampment was spotted on the site yesterday (June 20).

Bristol City Council officers have visited the four caravans at the park to offer access to a transit site.

However, the offer has been declined and the council says the legal process to remove the group is now underway.

“We are aware of four caravans on The Downs," a council spokesperson said.

"Officers have visited the site to issue a trespass notice and undertaken welfare checks.

"The occupants have been offered access to the Transit Site in Avonmouth and have declined, with the legal process to seek their removal now under way.”

“We have a joint protocol for managing unlawful encampments in Bristol with Avon and Somerset police which can be found at https://www.bristol.gov.uk/policies-plans-strategies/managing-unauthorised-encampments-policy.’’
