Travellers move next to Ayrshire supermarket as council 'monitor' camp

A travelling community has set up camp beside an Ayrshire supermarket.

Campervans and cars have parked up at the council car park behind Morrisons in Ayr.

It is believed the Travellers moved into the town site which runs adjacent to the railway line out of Ayr station.

An onlooker says they have spotted rubbish already dumped at the car park, which is operated by South Ayrshire Council.

Council chiefs have said they are monitoring the encampment and will liaise with Travellers.

It is the latest spot Travellers have chosen to base themselves in the seaside town.

We told how residents in the Newton area complained of a ‘disgusting’ mess being left at Newton Shore by Travellers.

Fuming residents informed the council they had discovered human faeces, nappies and a dead chicken at the site.

In October last year, a similar issue was raised with the council by residents prompting the local authority to threaten legal action against the Travellers.

Travellers were also spotted in Mainholm beside the former Mainholm Academy back in April, prompting legal action by the council.

A council spokesperson said: "We are liaising with the Travellers and monitoring the current encampment."
