Travellers leave Weston-super-Mare seafront following police intervention

A group of travellers have left Weston-super-Mare seafront after being ordered to do so by police.

The encampment, on the Beach Lawns, consisted of around nine caravans and several vehicles.

Officers descended on the site on Thursday (May 9) to knock on caravan doors, talk to occupants and take pictures of number plates.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Constabulary has now confirmed police served a notice to leave while at the scene.

“Police and council officials attended Beach Lawns on the sea front in Weston-super-Mare yesterday, where a number of travellers and their caravans had parked," he said.

“Police served a S61 notice, requiring the travellers to leave the location and not to return. All caravans had left the area by 4.30pm.”

One resident, who did not want be named, spoke to Somerset Live about the travellers.

He said: “It’s just an ongoing thing. They come round every so many months.

'It just disrupts everything'

“They do a circuit. They go from here down to Brean, then to Taunton, then to Wellington before coming back up to Weston.

“They’ve got a good plan, but it just disrupts everything."
