Travellers in Portishead moved on as clean-up operation begins

A group of travellers in Portishead who camped illegally on sports fields have moved on.

The group of around 15 caravans and associated vehicles arrived on the Gordano School playing fields at Clapton Lane on Wednesday night.

It is understood the group also parked on fields in Portbury earlier in the month.

The land is owned by Persimmom Homes and used by the school for its sport activities.

It is also used by other sporting organisations in the town, such as Portishead Football Club, for training.

Portishead Town Council has been monitoring the site with the police.

The group was issued with a direction to leave the site and vacated the land yesterday (Sunday).

A clean up operation is now underway.

A spokesman for Portishead Town Council said: “All the travellers have now left the Gordano School playing fields.

“North Somerset Council has been made aware.

“It has a contract with Biffa for clearing up traveller sites and, based on previous experience, we would expect the clear up to take place over the next couple of days.”

It is not known where the travellers have moved on to.

It is understood that they were in the area to attend a wedding.

North Somerset is a popular stop off with travellers during the summer months when they arrive in the district looking for work.

Already this year groups have parked up across the district, with camps at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre, Clarence Park and Weston Airfield in Weston-super-Mare.

Currently North Somerset Counncil has no transient sites for travellers where they can be moved onto.

However the district does offer a number of permanent pitches for the travelling community including the Willowmead site and a newly developed site at the Old Junction Yard, both in Weston-super-Mare.

North Somerset Council spokesman Nick Yates said: "The travellers left on Sunday. Teams have been clearing rubbish left behind and re-securing the site."
