Travellers in Portishead could be moved on as council apply for eviction notice

Council chiefs have applied to the courts to move on a group of travellers from Portishead Lake Grounds.

The group of travellers – four caravans, two camper vans and associated vehicles - moved on to the beauty spot on Monday.

The group is parked up on Lake Road, close to the bowling green.

The council issued the group with a notice to leave by 9am on Wednesday but they remain on the site.

Authority chiefs have now applied to the court for a hearing to evict the group.

The hearing is due to take place tomorrow afternoon.

If a possession order is granted, the council will then evict the group.

North Somerset Council spokesman Richard Turner said: “We have managed to secure a court hearing for Friday afternoon to get a possession order to remove them.”

The police are also aware of the encampment and are ‘monitoring the situation.’'

The group had initially tried to park up on a site at the rear of Marina Gardens in the town but were moved on by police.

They arrived at the lake grounds shortly afterwards.

Local residents have reported the group have been hanging out washing on the barriers.

There have also been reports of amounts of discarded toilet roll being found in the neighbouring bushes.

This is the latest in a number of traveller encampments in the resort this year,

Earlier this summer a large group of travellers parked up at the school playing fields at Clapton Lane in Portishead.

The group stayed several days before moving on, leaving a trail of mess behind them.

There have also been illegal encampments at the Beach Lawns. Clarence Park and Hutton Moor Leisure Centre in Weston-super-Mare this year.

North Somerset is a popular stop off with travellers during the summer months when they arrive in the district looking for work..

Currently the council has no transient sites for travellers where they can be moved onto.

However the district does offer a number of permanent pitches for the travelling community including the Willowmead site and a newly developed site at the Old Junction Yard, both in Weston-super-Mare.
