Travellers have set up illegal camp on this seafront site in Weston-super-Mare

A group of travellers have set up an illegal camp on Weston-super-Mare seafront.

The group of around nine caravans arrived at the Beach Lawns on May 8, setting up camp close to the circus which has arrived in the seaside town.

What are the rights of travellers?

It is believed the travellers are the same group as those evicted from Locking playing fields earlier in the week.

North Somerset Council officers were on site and carrying out welfare checks on the group as of 11am.

North Somerset Council spokesman Nick Yates said: "A group of travellers have pitched up on the Beach Lawns.

"There are around nine caravans and associated vehicles.

"Our housing team is carrying out welfare checks.

"We understand this is the same group that was evicted from Locking playing fields."

The Beach Lawns is a popular stop off for travellers with the seafront green space seeing a number of illegal encampments last year.

Due to the fact the Beach Lawns, owned by the council, is used for many events and attractions throughout the year, access to the site is largely unrestricted.

The cash strapped authority spends thousands of pounds each year dealing with illegal traveller camps.

As well as the costs of applying for eviction notices through the courts, the authority is often left with a large clean up fee following encampments.

The council has no transient sites for travellers where they can be moved on to.

However the district does offer a number of permanent pitches for the travelling community including the Willowmead site and a newly developed site at the Old Junction Yard, both in Weston-super-Mare.

There are also privately operated traveller camps in the district.
