Travellers have set up camp in Cardiff city fields

A number of Travellers have set up camp in Cardiff with caravans taking over Pontcanna Fields car park.

The vehicles have taken up a large portion of the car park, which is run and owned by Cardiff Council. It is thought they arrived over the weekend.

Cardiff Council said they are aware of the encampment and are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

It is understood that an annual Christmas meeting of Travellers from different parts of the UK was held in Cardiff on Sunday, November 23.

Photos from the car park on Monday afternoon show a number of caravans and trucks at the car park as well as a police presence in the area.

Some of the caravans were taking up multiple spaces in the car park, which normally charges motorists up to £3 to park there, depending on the length of their stay.

South Wales Police are yet to confirm their attendance at the site, however a police van can be seen in photos from the scene.

A Cardiff Council spokesperson said: “The Council can confirm that the illegal encampment protocol has been initiated to an encampment in Pontcanna and steps are being taken to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.”
