Travellers have set up camp here again and people aren't happy

A group of travellers have once again set up camp in Southport.

A convoy of caravans appeared on a car park on Tulketh Street - and it's the second time in less than a month an illegal camp has appeared in the town.

On May 29, a group of seven caravans and associated vehicles parked up at the derelict Park and Ride site in Kew without a permit.

And last Wednesday, legal representatives from Sefton Council were granted a court order for their removal.

However, yesterday,  a group of travellers pitched up on Tulketh Street, although it is not currently known whether this is the same group.

One woman, who lives near the camp, said: "It's an absolute joke. If I put a foot out of line, I'd have the council and/or police knocking at my door and giving me a fine, but [travellers] seem to be able to get away with trespassing and making a mess."

Southport businessman Oliver Goldberg said: "I'd welcome travellers into Southport if they followed the law [and] kept the area tidy."

A spokesman from Sefton Council said: “We are aware of the presence of travellers at Tulketh Street car park and are currently in the process of conducting a site visit.”

Figures obtained from a Freedom Of Information request last year showed travellers set up camp more than once a month in Sefton.

In June of last year, residents were outraged when travellers pitched up illegally at three different areas in the borough within the space of a few weeks.
