Travellers evicted from Weston-super-Mare seafront site set up another illegal camp in town

A group of travellers who set up an illegal camp on Weston-super-Mare seafront have now moved onto land next to a council owned leisure centre.

The group of around nine caravans first arrived in the resort earlier this month, moving onto playing fields in Locking.

After being moved on from the playing fields, they stopped temporarily at the Beach Lawns on Wednesday, with police moving in last night.

That forced them to leave the seafront but they simply moved on to land at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre last night.

It is not known whether the land occupied by the travellers is owned by the council.

UK set for hotter weather than Barcelona as Met Office says temperatures are forecast to soar

However, officers have been on site this morning and carried out welfare checks on the group.

Council spokesman Nick Yates said: "Our officers have been on site today carrying out welfare checks."

The land at and around Hutton Moor Leisure Centre is a popular stop-off point with travellers.

Last June a group parked up on the land at the rear of the complex before being moved on by the local authority.

North Somerset Council spends thousands of pounds each year on dealing with illegal traveller encampments.

As well as officer time and the cost of applying to the magistrates court for an order to evict the groups there are also the costs of cleaning up sites after illegal encampments.

Last summer the authority was forced to play 'cat and mouse' with traveller groups who, after being evicted from one site, simply moved to another close by.

What are the rights of travellers?

Each time the authority has to carry out welfare checks, ask the group to leave and if they do not comply, apply to the courts to move them on.

Currently the council has no transient sites for travellers where they can be moved onto.

However the district does offer a number of permanent pitches for the travelling community including the Willowmead site and a newly developed site at the Old Junction Yard, both in Weston-super-Mare.

There are also privately operated traveller camps in the district.

Conservative councillors have meanwhile called for a tougher stance on illegal traveller camps in Bristol.
