Travellers' camp appears at old gasworks site

A new travellers' camp has appeared at a former gasworks site near Birkenhead town centre.

A large number of cars and mobile homes could be seen parked up on the former industrial site in Hind Street, to the back of Birkenhead Central station.

The site was formerly dominated by two huge gas holders which were dismantled around two years ago.

Since then the large brownfield site has stood unused, with access barred by high fencing, padlocked gates and other obstacles placed in the way.

It is not known if this is the same group which occupied the car park at Spital station in Wirral last weekend.

Rows of caravans could be seen on either side of the car park, which is used by Merseyrail customers.

After leaving that site, another temporary camp was set up less than a mile away, in a field on the corner of Croft Avenue and Bromborough Road, next to Woodslee Primary School.

This site was vacated shortly afterwards following an intervention from council officers.

Elsewhere, a convoy of caravans and other vehicles parked up at Burbo Bank Road North, overlooking Crosby beach in Sefton, earlier this week.

By today, however, they appeared to have moved on.
