Travellers at Durdham Down refuse to move to transit site in Avonmouth

Travellers camped on Durdham Down have refused to move to a transit site in Avonmouth.

Eight cars and 12 caravans pitched up on the grassy area near the White Tree roundabout on Saturday (April 13).

One member of the camp, who did not wish to be named, previously said they were staying there to visit Funderworld , which recently returned to Durdham Down for its third season.

Bristol City Council confirmed yesterday (April 15) that the legal process to remove the group had started after they rejected an offer to move to a transit site.

“Officers visited the site today (Monday) and the offer of access to the transit site at Avonmouth, which is specifically for Gypsies and Travellers, was declined," a council spokesperson said.

"The legal process for removal of the group from the location on the Downs has started.’’

Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze councillor Steve Smith (Cons) said this legal process could take up to three weeks.

"The council will start the long-winded legal process of gaining a possession order, which is what they need in order to evict the group. They estimate that will take two to three weeks," he said.

"The police do have the power to evict the group more quickly, but will only do so if they believe that a serious breach of the peace has occurred."
