Traveller site with '50 caravans' takes over Merseyrail station car park

Around 50 travellers caravans are currently parked up near a Merseyrail train station.

Photos taken today, Saturday, July 11, show a large number of mobile homes, parked up in the car park at Spital station in Wirral.

A member of the public first reported seeing the caravans parked up on Friday afternoon.

Taking to social media they warned others who were taking a train from Spital, not to park at the station, due to the caravans which had "taken over the car park."

A Merseyrail spokesperson said the matter is being dealt with by the British Transport Police.

British Transport Police has been contacted for comment.

In photos taken at the station today, dozens of caravans can be seen parked beside cars in the car park.

The rows of caravans can be seen on either side of the car park, which is used by Merseyrail customers.

A number of them have their windows and doors open, while plastic containers have been left outside them.

In June, caravans parked at a popular local seaside spot in New Brighton, Wirral sparked fears that chaotic scenes seen at a similar camp two years ago could be recreated.

Travellers had parked two caravans at The Dips but they left following “swift action” locally.

There had been fears that this small camp could grow, after a much larger number of caravans set up camp at The Dips in 2018.

The government is considering new measures to allow local authorities and the police to deal with “unauthorised encampments” more easily.

Travellers' rights groups have consistently said the community faces discrimination within the UK and has called for changes in the way travellers are treated by police, local authorities and government.
