Traveller group Pavee Point to meet Garda Commissioner after garda suspended over controversial 'call-out' video

A traveller support group is to meet with the Garda Commissioner over a video which appeared to show an officer mocking their community.

The man has been suspended after appearing in the “call-out” clip which was filmed before a charity boxing match.

A Garda spokesman confirmed a member has been suspended pending an ongoing internal investigation.

And Pavee Point now plans to meet Commissioner Drew Harris to “discuss the issue further” – but it won’t insist upon the officer’s sacking.

Spokesman Martin Collins told the Irish Mirror: “We obviously cannot pre-empt the outcome of any investigation but we believe any response has to be proportionate.

“In this particular instance, Pavee Point will not be seeking that the garda concerned would be dismissed.

“We would be calling for a public apology and for the Garda to come in and have a conversation with Travellers in Pavee Point and that he would also undergo some anti-racism and human rights training.

"In fact, anti-racism and human rights training needs to be embedded in the training curriculum in Templemore College.

“This would go somewhere towards dealing with the underbelly of racism in An Garda Siochana.”

Last Friday Mr Collins slammed the offensive footage as “appalling” and urged Commissioner Harris to take action.

The video appeared to show the garda and a Dublin Fire Brigade worker taunting each other ahead of the charity event.

The garda can be seen apparently calling out his opponent while mimicking the antics of some Traveller bare-knuckle fighters who have been known to goad their opponents in the same way.

The event, which took place in Croke Park on Friday, raised funds for Temple Street Children’s Hospital and ARC Cancer Support Centres.

Tickets for the event, which saw gardai and firemen go toe-to-toe, at the Hogan Suite cost €20.

An online fundraiser for the bouts raised more than €26,000.
