Traveller encampment set up in Sophia Gardens car park in Cardiff

Travellers have set up camp in the middle of a Cardiff city centre car park.

Cardiff council are taking action after a number of caravans were spotted in the car park at Sophia Gardens on Friday.

A spokeswoman for the authority said: "The council can confirm that the illegal encampment protocol has been initiated to an encampment in Sophia Gardens and steps are being taken to resolve the situation as quickly as possible."

Cardiff council currently manage two residential sites for gypsies and travellers at Rover Way and Shirenewton.

A sea wall with an estimated cost of £11m is to be built along the coastline near Rover Way to protect the site and nearby homes and business from flooding.

Last August residents reported a group of travellers' caravans that had moved onto the site of a £1.5m site overlooking one of the best views in Swansea.

The vehicles parked in the the driveway of Mumbles Hill House, overlooking Swansea Bay, which was subject to a planning application to demolish the existing home and build a six-bedroom family home with a swimming pool.
