Traveller encampment forces two cricket games to be cancelled

Two cricket games scheduled to be played in Downend last weekend were cancelled due to the arrival of a traveller encampment.

Bristol Asians were set to play Timsbury 2nds on Saturday (June 1) along with Churchways against Hambrook.

However, both games were shelved after a group of travellers set up camp on the King George V playing fields.

Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council said the games were cancelled because grounds staff were unable to access the fields due to the incursion.

A council spokesperson confirmed the travellers have now left the site.

She told Bristol Live : "The grounds staff couldn't get on the field to prepare so we had to cancel the games.

"The travellers have now left, they were literally there for 24 hours.

"We'll be able to get everything prepared moving forward."
