Travelers notebook: Patrick Cantlay, in striking distance after day one, Bubba Watson confident

CROMWELL, Conn. _ Patrick Cantlay has every reason to feel comfortable at TPC River Highlands.

In 2011, as an amateur, he shot a then-course record 60. The following year, he played in his first tournament as a professional at the Travelers Championship.

On Thursday, he shot 4-under, putting himself in a tie for third as morning rounds wrapped up. A double-bogey on the eighth hole was the only blemish on the day.

"I do feel really comfortable around here," Cantlay said. "I like coming back to places that I like playing golf at."

As an amateur in his second tour event, he shot a four-day total of 269 _ highlighted by the second-round 60, and finished tied for 24th. Now ranked eighth in the world, he won his second career tournament two weeks ago at The Memorial.

"I definitely look back here on that round with fond memories," he said. "I wasn't really expecting to come out and shoot a score like that. It's nice to come back to a place where you've had success ... it's definitely one of the only golf courses that I can get on the first tee and think, 'I can birdie every hole.' "
