Travel writer asks what Glasgow's 'signature pub' is sparking online debate

A travel writer has sparked a debate on Twitter about whether some of the UK's biggest cities have a single 'signature pub ', and there were more than a few suggestions for Glasgow.

People flocked to comment on Simon Calder's Tweet which asked the question that included both Glasgow and Edinburgh before he offered his own picks for Belfast and London.

In the Tweet, which had over 800 comments, Simon asked: "UK cities: does each have a “signature” pub? I want to visit them all. I’d argue: Belfast, Crown Liquor Saloon; London, George, Borough High Street. But Bristol, Cardiff, Birmingham, Nottingham, Norwich, Hull, Leeds, Bradford, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow?"

One choice that cropped up, again and again, was, of course, the famous Horse Shoe Bar on Drury Street close to Central Station.

@MalcolmWebster2 posted: The Horseshoe is probably the 'signature pub' in Glasgow. Two minute's walk from the station as well. The Pot Still just a 5 min walk north from the station has an amazing choice of whisky and beer."

@AJDyson139 agreed: "Glasgow would be The Horseshoe. Although The Pot Still, The Scotia, Tennents Bar, and The Grove also fit the mould (The State Bar is the best looking)."

If so, what would be your pick? (GL)

@WalshEugene said: "Glasgow’s entry must be Horseshoe Bar, Drury St in the city centre between Central & Queen St stations. Iconic Victorian era meeting spot for generations of Glaswegians."

@mmckay1_mckay described The Horseshoe Bar as a Glasgow "institution".

While @footyngolf added: "Probably the Horseshoe in Glasgow but for a great pub I'd go to the Pot Still or the Steps Bar."

@tomcallumreid suggested the Griffin on Bath Street, while others voted for the Laurieston.

@M1980MC wrote: "Surprised no-one suggested The Scotia for Glasgow. Claim on the oldest pub, full of character and of course an old watering hole of The Big Yin, Billy Connolly. Other good suggestions but Scotia for me."
