Travel website says this Leeds pub makes the best chips in West Yorkshire

A Leeds pub has been declared the best place for chips in West Yorkshire.

Whitelock's Ale House, in Leeds city centre, makes the best chips in the county, according to the international travel website Big7.

A finalist each was picked from 49 English counties and cities.

And the winners were selected using a mixture of online reviews, previous media coverage and popular food blogs. A panel of food tasting experts also influenced the final decisions.

Big7 describes West Yorkshire winner Whitelock's as: "The sort of place you wish the walls could talk and if they could they’d be telling you how people have enjoyed these chips for generations."

It adds: "They pride themselves on serving good honest food and real ales in what is Leeds’ oldest pub."

Whitelock's assistant manager Beth Templeton explained the pub's recipe for success: "They are always home cooked and made with love by our chef. They are always fresh with skin on and never frozen and made from real potatoes."

The pub, on Turk's Head Yard, is the oldest hostelry in central Leeds. It was opened as The Turk's Head in 1715 before it was taken over by the Whitelock family in the 1880s.

The oldest pub in the West Yorlshire – and indeed, England – is The Bingley Arms, Bardsey.
