Travel update: Latest restrictions for holidaymakers who aren't fully vaccinated

A raft of major changes to the UK travel restrictions have come into force this month.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced the amber list has been scrapped and the red list has been slashed to just seven countries.

Ministers have relaxed rules as they want to enable people to "exercise personal responsibility" about where they travel, and are also keen to see the sector recover from the pandemic.

Fully vaccinated travellers holidaying in a country that doesn't feature on the red list will no longer be required to take a pre-departure test before their return to England.

Jet-setters who have received both jabs must take a coronavirus test on or before the second day after their arrival.

This currently must be a PCR test, but from later this month people arriving in England will be able to use a cheaper and quicker lateral flow test instead.

However, holidaymakers who have yet to receive both jabs will be subjected to tougher restrictions.

Travellers who aren't fully vaccinated must take a lateral flow test in the three days before travelling to the UK.

After they arrive, they must self-isolate for 10 days and take coronavirus tests on days two and eight.

Seven countries still remain on the UK's red list, including Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Haiti, Panama, Peru and Venezuela.

Jet-setters returning from a red list country must stay in a managed quarantine hotel for 10 days at a cost of £2,285 per solo traveller.

The red list is updated every three weeks, so the next change is expected to be announced on around October 28.
