Travel to Germany to see Bon Iver, Skepta, A$AP Rocky, and more inside a "city of iron"

It's one of the most popular European destinations for a short city break and a country with a great eye for beer. These are things we know. One thing perhaps not quite so well known about Germany is its talent for curating phenomenal music festivals.

From the heavy metal heavyweights Rock im Park in Nuremberg and Rock am Ring at the Nurburgring racetrack, to electronic music meccas - and Melt! Festival outside of Leipzig is exactly that.

The festival has been held for more than 20 years now and sits on an island named Ferropolis. Ferropolis, known as "the city of iron", is an open air museum and the final resting place for some of the giant industrial machinery of the 20th century.

Picture a quarry where all the Transformers have gone to die, and then had hundreds of strobe lights strapped to their backs - that's Melt! Festival.

The names headlining the bill this year are American indie folk-cum-electronic experimentalists Bon Iver, grime heavyweight Skepta and hip-hop fashion killer A$AP Rocky.

Other names across the weighty line-up are soulful golden child Jorja Smith, Four Tet, Canadian producer KAYTRANADA, a DJ set from downtempo mastermind Bonobo and much more.

The nearest airport is Leipzig, but those looking to make a proper trip of it can also fly to Berlin to explore the German capital, which remains one of the most important cultural cities of the past 100 years.

Weekend tickets cost €139 and are on sale from the Melt! website. VIP packages are also available.
