Travel The Blaydon Race route as famous run adds changes ahead of its return this June

The countdown is on to one of the region's most popular runs of the year (no, not that one). With the approach of the ninth of June, hundreds of runners soon will be “gannin’ alang the Scotswood Road”.

Yes, The Blaydon Race is almost upon us and, while it's an event steeped in local tradition, it's 4,000-or-so runners include entrants from all over the world.

It has been organised annually by Blaydon H & AC since 1981 and is aimed at top athletes and fun runners alike.

The turnout of both runners and spectators for this year’s event is again set to be huge, whatever weather Mother Nature will have in store for Newcastle .

When asked to explain its route, most people no doubt will cite the famous Scotswood Road line above from the song The Blaydon Races but it has plenty other points of local interest.

And this year sees changes to its finishing line.

What is the route for The Blaydon Race?

The Blaydon Race takes runners along the banks of the Tyne, hopefully in glorious sunshine.

Starting at Balmbra’s in Newcastle city centre , runners will head along Collingwood Street and Scotswood Road past Armstrong’s factory and over the Scotswood Bridge.

But, instead of ts previous finishing point at the playing fields on Shibdon Road in Blaydon , the run will end this time at the car park of Morrisons in the town.

What runners, and spectators, can expect as usual is music and dance en route: at the start, along the course and at the finish too.
