Travel Scotland: Covid tests and self-isolation requirements scrapped for UK arrivals

The Scottish Government made an announcement regarding travel for Scottish arrivals last night (January 24).

The new rules will now allow people to travel more freely without having to take a test or self-isolate.

It comes as key holiday destinations such as France have lifted the travel ban for UK tourists allowing people who are fully vaccinated to travel without the need to isolate.

Despite the good news, some rules and restrictions will remain in place such as the wearing of face masks meaning these coverings will still be mandatory at Scottish airports for everybody who is not exempt.

So what are the new rules and are they different from those who are not fully vaccinated?

The UK - including Scotland - have decided to scrap all covid testing requirements for those who are fully vaccinated and arriving into the country.

Regardless of vaccine status, all children under the age of 18 are classed as fully vaccinated.

This means people who are fully jabbed will no longer have to take a lateral flow test upon entry however they must complete a Passenger Locator Form.

The rules are slightly different for those who are not fully vaccinated meaning that if you come under this category, you must still take a pre-departure test before arriving in Scotland as well as carrying out a PCR test on or before day two after entry.

Despite this, self-isolation rules will change for those who are not fully vaccinated meaning as of next month, they will no longer have to self-isolate and they will no longer be required to take a day eight test.

In a statement, the Scottish Government said that the new rules were agreed following discussion between all four UK nations which will "provide a lifeline to the Scottish tourism and travel sectors."

"The measures will be extremely welcome for the Scottish tourism and aviation sectors, encouraging travel from our airports."

Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero, Energy and Transport Michael Matheson added: "These measures will significantly open up international travel and were agreed on a UK-wide basis.

"While this is a positive step which will be welcomed by many we believe further surveillance measures will be necessary across all nations – as intelligence will help in terms of variants of concern. It was agreed further work to take this forward will be carried out over the coming weeks."

When do the new travel rues come into force?

The new rules for UK arrivals comes into force at 4am on February 11.
