Travel rules: When the green, amber and red lists will be updated

Those on holiday at the moment, or looking to get away in the final week of August, will be carefully monitoring the status of the red, amber and green lists in case their holiday destination changes colour classification.

The traffic light international travel lists are set for another reshuffle in the coming review of countries, which will redraft the red, amber and green lists.

The latest raft of changes earlier this month saw France move to the regular amber list as well as Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Slovakia, Latvia, Romania and Norway among those added to the quarantine-free green list.

India was among four countries removed from the high-risk red list, alongside Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

The changes, which came into effect on August 8, meant travellers arriving from these countries are no longer required to spend 11 nights at a pricey quarantine hotel.

A solo traveller returning from a red list country has to pay £2,285 – up from the prior fee of £1,750.

The charge for an additional adult sharing a room more than doubled from £650 to £1,430 to “better reflect the increased costs involved”, the Government said.

Meanwhile, although Spain avoided red status, the government is now urging travellers to take a PCR test before they fly home from the country.

The travel industry is reportedly expecting its busiest period since travel restrictions were eased earlier this year.

As holidaymakers look to make a late summer break, firms such as TUI and Jet2 along with airlines easyJet and Ryanair are gearing up for a "frantic dash" up to and including the August Bank Holiday weekend before schools return.

However, many travellers are anxious that the scheduled travel review earmarked for the end of August 25 could see a number of popular destinations hit with further restrictions.

When will the lists be updated?

The reviews to the traffic travel system typically take place every three weeks, with the last update made on Thursday, August 5.

The last two announcements have broken with the routine of changes being unveiled on Thursdays.

Therefore, the next announcement, which will be made shortly before pupils return to schools, is likely to come on either Wednesday, August 25 or Thursday, August 26.
