Travel rules anyone going on holiday must still follow as Plan B ends

Plan B covid measures have come to an end in England.

This means that people are not legally obliged to wear face coverings, covid passes have been scrapped for venues and events and people no longer are being asked to work from home.

However, the end of Plan B measures does not mean that all covid restrictions have been removed.

Self-isolation rules still apply - though the people can now end their isolation period if they test negative on the fifth and sixth days - and a number of restrictions relating to international travel are still in place.

The travel rules will not change again until February 11 - which will see the end of mandatory covid testing before and after arrival for fully-vaccinated travellers.

Until then, a number of Government travel rules remain in place.

Below, we list the current Government regulations regarding international travel to and from England.

What are the current rules for travelling from England?

Rules on travelling to a foreign country from England depend on your destination.

The Government has the following checklist to follow when you are travelling to an overseas destination from England:

  • Check foreign travel advice for all countries you will visit or travel through. These rules are available here .

  • Arrange any COVID-19 tests you will need to enter the countries that you will travel to.

  • Find out how you can use the NHS COVID Pass to prove your vaccination status abroad. These rules are available here .

  • Check what you will need to do when you return to England. These rules are available here.

What are the current rules for returning to England?

If you are fully vaccinated , before you travel to England you must:

  • book and pay for a covid test – to be taken after you arrive in England

  • complete a passenger locator form – to be completed in the 48 hours before you arrive in England

  • You will need to enter the booking reference for your covid test in the UK passenger locator form.

If you are in England for less than two days, you still have to book and pay for a covid test to take after you arrive.

When you arrive in England, you do not need to quarantine. You must take your test before the end of day 2 - your day of arrival is day 0.

If your test result is positive, you must self-isolate. If your lateral flow test result is positive, you must also take a PCR test.

To qualify as fully vaccinated, you must have proof of full vaccination with a full course of an approved vaccine.

You must have had your final dose of the vaccine at least 14 days before you arrive in England - this does not include the day that you received your final dose.

The proof of vaccination must have been issued by either:

  • the UK vaccination programme

  • the United Nations vaccine programme for staff and volunteers

  • an overseas vaccination programme with an approved proof of vaccination for travel to the UK

If you are not fully-vaccinated , before you travel to England you must:

  • take a covid test – to be taken in the 2 days before you travel to England

  • book and pay for day 2 and day 8 PCR tests – to be taken after arrival in England

  • complete a passenger locator form – to be completed in the 48 hours before you arrive in England

  • You will need to enter the booking reference for your day 2 and day 8 tests in the UK passenger locator form.

After you arrive in England you must:

  • quarantine at home or in the place you are staying for 10 full days

  • take your PCR tests – you must book these tests before you travel

  • You must take the first test on or before day 2 and the second test on or after day 8. The day you arrive is day 0.

If you are in England for less than 10 days, you need to quarantine for the time that you are in the country.

You also need to book day 2 and day 8 PCR tests. You only need to take the tests if you are still in England on those days.

If your day 2 test comes back positive, you must self-isolate for 10 full days. You will not need to take the day 8 test if your day 2 test is positive.

However, if your day 2 test is negative, you must take your day 8 test.

If your day 8 test is positive, you must self-isolate for 10 full days. If it is negative , you can stop quarantine on whichever is later out of your tenth day or when you receive the day 8 test result.

When will the rules change?

Travel rules are set to change again on February 11 and will mean that fully vaccinated people will not need to take covid tests before or after they arrive in the UK.

The Government website states: "If you’re fully vaccinated you will no longer need to take a covid-19 test either before or after you arrive in the UK. You still need to complete a passenger locator form.

“If you are not fully vaccinated you will need to take a pre-departure test.

“After you arrive, you will need to take a PCR test on or before day 2, but you will only need to quarantine if it’s positive. You still need to complete a passenger locator form.”
