Travel restrictions Ireland: Full list of 'reasonable excuses' as gardai set to man major Easter checkpoints countrywide

Gardai will be stationed at checkpoints on a number of major roads and motorways as the Easter bank holiday weekend arrives.

As there were no immediate changes to the limit on how far people can travel from their home, regulations allow Gardaí to fine people who travel more than 5km and refuse to comply with a direction to turn back.

Those found in breach of Level 5 safety regulations will be issued with a fixed charge penalty notice which they will have to pay within 28 days.

But there are some allowances given by Gardaí for breaking the 5k rule.

Here is the full list of reasons stipulated by the Government that you can exceed the imposed restrictions at a Garda checkpoint.

Vital family reasons

People who are providing care to children, elderly or vulnerable people (particularly those who live alone) can avoid the travel restrictions.

Farmers who are caring for animals/livestock or involved in food production can travel as far as they need to in order to work.

To attend a wedding or a funeral

Though the numbers of people permitted to attend weddings and funerals have been lowered, if you are chosen, you can attend, no matter where in the country it is.
