Travel restrictions Ireland: Dublin holidaymakers driving over 250km 'thronging' area for days of fun

Dublin people reportedly "thronged" a Munster county over the Bank Holiday weekend heading over 250kms away to enjoy the sun.

Despite travel restrictions changing next Monday to county-wide or 20km if you're on a border, as it stands you are only allowed go 5km from your home.

But it's understood that a large number of visitors from the capital headed to the Kingdom for the long weekend.

There was numerous local reports that Dubs flouted rules, heading over 150 miles away for mini-holidays during the strict Level 5 lockdown rules.

One person told local newspaper The Kerryman that their supermarket was "absolutely thronged" with what they described as holidaymakers from Dublin.

There are only five exemptions that allow people to break travel restrictions and these include:

  • Travel to and from work, where work involves providing an essential service.
  • To attend medical appointments and collect medicines and other health products
  • For vital family reasons, such as providing care to children, elderly or vulnerable people and in particular for those who live alone but excluding social family visits
  • For farming purposes, that is food production or care of animals
  • To visit a grave

Wexford based web-developer Dave Bolger came up with a brilliant tool that will show the radius for you at the click of a button.

This website can help you find out where you can travel under the new regulations.

All you need to do is drag and drop the pin on your location and it will show you the 20km radius around your home.

The tool will calculate the distance based on where you open it on your phone so you don't have to do a thing.

Mr Bolger said previously: "This map will show you what that radius looks like. You can drag the pin to get your exact location for precise measurement from your door.

"If the map doesn't show; enable location services on your phone and for your browser, allow the site permission to your access your location."
